Sigh, I sure do miss the paragon of virtue AG Sessions or even Gonzalez.

Barr was the insider that everyone was chummy with, they thought he would continue to be a boring snobby ass stuff suit that they could suck up to at parties and not let his Nazi flag fly.

What a coincidence! Rudy goes dark after his associates are indicted. Career professionals testify in closed door hearings in the House and the Gaetz stunt to stop them crashes. Nobody pays attention to the Graham maneuver. So who is left? Well, good old Bill Barr, who makes John Mitchell look like a model of rectitude. If the DOJ actually proceeds with this fake investigation, it will confirm that our Constitution and system of laws cannot survive when a corrupt President is enabled by a corrupt Senate. We are on the cusp between survival and disaster — and it can end either way depending on whether the DOJ and FBI actually stop this headlong fall into authoritarianism.

So, is Barr now being reduced to bringing cases so pathetically weak that they can’t get indictments out of a grand jury?

Even though any halfway decent prosecutor is supposed to be able to get a grand jury to indict a ham sandwich — for anything?

Barr & Durham absolutely do need a grand jury to bring any felony charges, it’s built right into the Fifth Amendment. Only State and local prosecutors can bypass the GJ via a preliminary hearing. Barr can try bringing some weak ass misdemeanor charges without one but I doubt that would fly at all either in a court of law or public opinion.

Practically they have nowhere to go, it’s a fucking stunt.

Yes. Trumpsters like my brother have been ranting for a couple years about how Obama, Hillary, Comey, etc were all going to be wearing orange jump suits. My brother even gave a date of last Friday for charges to be issued against the deep state actors. Barr is well aware of this and knows that if they fail to make good, the administration will lose credibility. Now with the impending impeachment and the uproar about abandoning the Kurds, they have to take prompt action to stop the Democrats and to switch the narrative. This is a Hail Mary pass — and Barr better be stopped now.

She’s definitely no Democrat, but she’s convinced a lot of the same ultra-leftists who went for Jill Stein that she’s the one true anti-war candidate, despite not being anti-war at all.

Several years ago I proposed that groups like ISIS would attract people willing to convert and travel for the chance to fully and freely express antisocial tendencies within a system that (loosely) justified it. We’re in a similar situation these days with CBP…and probably with private prisons, if we ever get to crack one open and look at the guts.

On one hand, CBP will attract people excited by the prospect of abuse of power.

On the other, the system will winnow out the people who get the job with no preconception, but can’t accept brutality because they’ll burn out, leaving the people who pass through the brutalization phase and find themselves capable of enjoying cruelty.

What we’re watching is the accelerating spiral of bad behavior as the group culture folds in on itself. What was transgressive is becoming normal.

I’ve had bad vibes from Tulsi for many years. My comment from March 1, 2016:

Over at the dailybern, they’re all excited about Tulsi Gabbard (who most of them had never heard of before yesterday) and saying her endorsement is MUCH more important/impressive/exciting than anything that old stick-in-the-mud Elizabeth Warren could have produced. It’s all Tulsi for VP and Tulsi for SoS and Tulsi really ups Bernie’s foreign policy cred because she was in the military (I know, huh??)

You know, she spoke at our state convention a few years ago and there was something about her that just didn’t set well with me. Can’t remember exactly what it was about her, but I was not impressed at all.

And, as I recall, the entire right wing was high-fiving about how awesome it was that we *wouldn’t* be getting the Olympics under Obama, because Salt Lake, Rio and London lost *sooo* much money, and Chicago is awful, and Obama was engaging in corruption, and globalism, and socialism, and what-ever-the-hell-else they could throw against the wall.

Nobody else *could* compete with LA, even if they wanted to.

LA already has all the venues for all the events, plus an athletes village, broadcast facilities, sufficient hotel rooms, entertainment activities around town for the days people don’t have event tickets, etc. There will be ZERO construction costs.

LA turned a substantial profit from the ‘84 games, had less crime and traffic than a regular month… and that was before building subways.

At least two of the GOP dolts who occupied the SCIF are Alabama representatives. Mo Brooks is a walking fool, so there’s nothing of note there. The other, Brendan Byrne, is the sanest of the handful of wunderkinder who are running against Doug Jones for Senate. If Byrne has somehow shot himself in the dick, that’s one for the good guys.

They did this in order to enhance the party talking points. To be able to present to their knuckle-dragging base that this is some sort of secret partisan Deep State witch hunt.

We are on the cusp between survival and disaster — and it can end either way depending on whether the DOJ and FBI actually stop this headlong fall into authoritarianism.

its a race to who gets there first, the house or this ‘investigation’

though one advantage barr has is he can just make stuff up
he doesnt have to ‘find’ anything real because everyone knows there isnt anything to find

Associated Press: “Asked about criticism that the White House lacks a coordinated pushback effort and could do a better job delivering its message, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said, ‘It’s hard to message anything that’s going on behind closed doors and in secret.’ ‘It’s like you’re fighting a ghost, you’re fighting against the air. Remember a ‘bounty’ on the whistleblower. the whistleblower must be unmasked! Confront my accuser!!

The WB was huge news. Now not so much at all.

good times. and only two odd weeks ago. oh no, not even:

WAPO:

“Democrats were once prepared to take extraordinary steps to preserve the whistleblower’s identity under questioning, considering him central to their investigation. But over the past month, they have grown cold to the idea of exposing him to additional scrutiny after several witnesses described how Trump leveraged access and military aid to secure a promise from Ukraine to launch investigations that could help his 2020 reelection bid.”

and this is because “The whistleblower is the person who saw the fire and called 911. The rest of the witnesses saw the actual arsonist set the blaze.”

so it’s good that the dems are protecting the whistleblower system by not unnecessarily exposing the individual because they’ve already corroborated and confirmed elsewhere.

So the admin is saying nothing about the substance

Focusing everything on the process

A process put in place by the republicans in 2015

Only those who are guilty with no better option put their ENTIRE defense on “process”

And they’re even getting that wrong

Worst of all for them; they know it.

re: #178 retired cynic

[Embedded content]

Well, she blew her chance at reelection when she raised…. *checks notes*

no money for her House bid.

Hawaii state Sen. Kai Kahele, a Democrat, has raised $345,616 from Hawaii donors in his bid to unseat Gabbard. That’s more than Gabbard’s presidential campaign has raised from donors in the Aloha State — $221,501 — over the same time period through September.
Congressional candidates typically attract significantly more in-state cash than presidential contenders, particularly those from small states like Hawaii. Gabbard’s top state so far, like most presidential hopefuls, is California, which provided her with nearly $1.2 million.
Hawaii is one of the few states that allows candidates to run for president and Congress at the same time. But Gabbard isn’t even attempting to raise money for her House bid, taking in no cash for her congressional campaign from July through September. Kahele, on the other hand, has brought in nearly $500,000 and is sitting on more than $370,000 cash on hand. He has raised most of his money, 74 percent, from individual donors giving more than $200.

One of Kahele’s main criticisms of Gabbard is that she has been too focused on running for president to represent her district. He noted last week that Gabbard missed a vote to condemn President Donald Trump’s decision to abandon Kurdish forces in northern Syria. Gabbard has missed more than half of the House votes from July through September, and 83 percent of votes in October, according to govtrack.us. Her low attendance rate is similar to many other presidential candidates.

Gabbard has $2.1 million left in her presidential campaign, and if she decides to abandon her low-polling White House bid to keep her seat in Congress, she could transfer that cash back to her House campaign.

One prominent political figure doesn’t think Gabbard will run for that House seat.

That much was made clear when she dropped out of her House race. Now, to get her to quit being called a Democrat when she’s clearly a useful idiot for the GOP and right wingers who amplify her support in the Fox news crowd.

Bolton’s no hero. He’s merely pulling back the curtain on what we’ve known all along (and which Trump has telegraphed). Trump is a reactionary know nothing who doesn’t listen to anyone telling him what he needs to hear.

He’s a clear and present danger to the nation, and Bolton’s potential testimony means that he’s doing more in his short time in Trumpworld than Mattis or any of the others have done in the time Trump’s been in power. Mattis is writing a book. Profiting from the disastrous admin he was a part of.

A little background on John Durham:

In December 2000, Durham revealed secret FBI documents that convinced a judge to vacate the 1968 murder convictions of Enrico Tameleo, Joseph Salvati, Peter J. Limone and Louis Greco because they had been framed by the agency. In 2007, the documents helped Salvati, Limone, and the families of the two other men, who had died in prison, win a $101.7 million civil judgment against the government.[10]

Durham also led a series of high-profile prosecutions in Connecticut against the New England Mafia and corrupt politicians, including former governor John G. Rowland.[10]

MIT Freezes Water At Boiling Point

It is known to anybody who is familiar with the laws of pressure, or who has tried to cook in the mountains, that the boiling and freezing points of water change when the water is exposed to differing pressures. Normally this effect is small, and only has causes differences of a few degrees. Researchers at MIT found that if water is placed inside a tiny enough space, a space only slightly larger than the water molecules themselves, then the freezing point can be raised to above its boiling point. This is done by means of carbon nanotubes, small straw-shaped structures that are the workhorse of nanotech.

Didn’t Vonnegut write a book about fucked-up ice? Yeah, he did; Cat’s Cradle.

Both my mom and paternal grandfather were lifelong federal employees. They worked hard. They didn’t serve a party. They served their nation. The way “deep state” is used to dismiss hardworking people like them angers me greatly. The Trump administration would rather government be filled with Trump asskissers.

Well, that’s only more-or-less normal (disgusting, but normal). The sick part, though, is the number of voters in the electorate who would agree 110% - but only for Trump.
Toleration for a politicized bureaucracy and personality-cult politics is definitely a one-way street. Though one with a lot of bus traffic….

The footage shows the teenager running from officers, jumping a fence, falling to the ground and continuing to flee. Murrietta-Golding was an estimated 35 feet away from the officers when one of them fired a single bullet into his head. The officer then hopped the fence, approached the boy’s limp body and handcuffed his hands behind his back.

Many in the GOP think House Democrats are playing politics with impeachment and that Trump’s actions don’t merit impeachment. They also think the media is biased against the White House and the president.

All the same, they think they’re losing the public battle and that Trump’s lack of discipline is hurting them.

Does he need to be so unhinged? He says the dumbest things,” said one Republican senator who vented frustration with the president’s outbursts on Twitter and in front of the White House press corps.

Yeah, there needs to be a coordinated response to everything. There needs to be a coordinated effort to just shut up,” the senator said.

GOP lawmakers say that President Trump and his political team need to overhaul their strategy to regain momentum and prevent their party from losing the White House and a number of congressional seats next fall.

But they got (un)lucky and he won in 2016… it was always destined to end badly for Trump and his supporters, it’s just happening a bit later than most of us anticipated.

Trump has been sabotaging NATO for the past 3 years. Turkey was already moving in this direction by trying to get the S-400 system from Russia. Now they’re looking for new planes.

Yeah, this isn’t helping our national security in the slightest, but Russia benefits every which way. Figures.

I’m not an expert on NATO, but from the very limited reading I’ve done, while a member state may leave of their own volition, there doesn’t seem to be a way to expel a current member.

That seems like a flaw in the design, given the current situation. But I can also understand why you might not want a provision like that… for example, imagine a situation where two member states have a disagreement over some non-NATO issue and the more powerful member tries to leverage continued NATO membership on getting their way.

Oh, you mean that isn’t the case and that there are serious gaps in Trump’s new DOJ theory to try and get Obama era officials charged? I’m shocked. Shocked. ///

To me, the most shocking thing here is the very fact that the Attorney General of the United States is - personally - conducting an “investigation” to try to try to pin criminal charges on government (law-enforcement/intelligence) officials NOT (apparently) because they are suspected of any actual wrongdoing, but because the Administration/President want to try to cover up or deflect attention away from their own wrongdoing. And “wrong” in this case, seemingly being defined as “insufficiently deferential to Donald Trump”.

I mean, we do have the comforting fact that, as usual, a Trump Admin crusade against its perceived enemies is more-than-likely to blow up in their faces, or prove precisely the opposite of what they are trying to “uncover”, but RLY: this is seriously Third-World-dictatorship crap. And of course, hugely underreported in the “MSM” .
